A herbal treatment that has been credited with relieving many ailments, such as headaches and back pain, has been used in the past by some in China.
But according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the herbal medicine is no longer considered safe for adults.
The herbal medicine’s label says it may be harmful for people with certain medical conditions and that its active ingredients are not approved for use by pregnant women or nursing mothers.
“The herbal medicine used in China does not meet the current FDA’s safety guidelines,” the agency wrote in a statement.
It added that the herbs used in this formulation are not in a state of purity or proven safety for any individual.
According to the FDA, the herbal medicines are not marketed in the United States as they are not considered food products and are not listed in the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) database of prescription drugs.
“It is unknown how many of the herbal preparations used in Chinese herbal medicine are actually being used in medicine in the U.S.,” the agency said.
The Chinese government did not respond to a request for comment on the agency’s findings.
The US Food & Drug Administration has not yet responded to the agency.
In the meantime, the Chinese government has also banned sales of herbal medicines that contain certain ingredients and banned some herbal medicines from sale in the country.
